How I Have Oats [4 Different Ways]

   As most of you know, I have an obsession with oats. If you watch my videos, you would most probably be sick of all the footages and time lapses of either me preparing, or eating them. I can't remember why, how and when I started having oats but a thing I know for sure is that I have to have them everyday now! *it's crazy, I know*

   You wouldn't have guessed how many "oats" related questions I had been getting recently especially on how I make my overnight oats and savoury oats! I thought it would only be right if I write about all the different ways I have my oats. I also made a video about it so you can also watch it on my channel.


  Let me briefly introduce you to oats. There are many types of oats and they all come from the oat grain but the processing part that the whole grains go through turns them into the many varied types of oats. There is oat bran, oat groats, steel cut oats, rolled oats and quick rolled oats/instant oats. I've only tried rolled and instant oats.

How I Have My Oats

1) The Normal Way


    What I mean by the normal way is that I just cook them like how you normally would. Who remembers the vlog where I said that cooking rolled oats takes up so much time and I would rather have my instant oats?! Says who? I prefer rolled oats now that I don't even mind cooking them in the mornings when I have my 8am classes! My love for rolled oats came about when I added a secret ingredient. Ever since I had my rolled oats this way, I've officially became an oats addict! Now, let me tell you what's the secret ingredient!

 You'll need :-
  •  1/2 cup of rolled oats
  • 1 cup of water or milk of your choice
  • 1 ripe banana (yup this is the secret ingredient)

Instructions: 

   1) Pour in 1/2 cup of rolled oats


    2) Add a cup of water/milk of your choice (I'm using soy milk)


    3) Turn the heat to high and let it boil


4) Keep stirring it! You wouldn't want the oats to stick to the bottom of the pot. Don't worry if you see tons of bubbles. I panicked the first time I cooked them. Lower the heat when the oats are mostly soak into the milk and has a thick consistency (as shown in 3rd pic)





 5) Now it's time to add the banana! You can either mash them first or later on in the pot. I prefer cutting them into slices and then make them into smaller pieces in the pot instead of mashing them completely. Then, turn back the heat on.




6) Adding ripe bananas will help to thicken the oats. I normally let the banana and oats to cook a little while more just to make sure that the banana turns really mushy.



   7) Once it's at the texture that you want, turn off the heat and serve!


   8) Top it off with more bananas or any toppings of your choice and enjoy!





 Definitely try adding banana guys because it is a total game changer! I wouldn't have my oats any other way now! ps: I had it for breakfast and lunch the other day *oopsss* Low-key craving for a bowl now.

2) Overnight Oats

I always receive tons of questions on how I make my overnight oats and guys, it is actually really simple and it takes less than 5 minutes! I would normally make overnight oats a night before if I know that I wouldn't have time to make breakfast the next morning. Basically, they are my on-the-go/ grab & go food!

    You'll need :-
  •  1/2 cup of instant oats/rolled oats
  •  1 cup of milk of your choice (add more if needed)
  •  1 tbsp honey (optional)
  •  1/2 tbsp chia seeds (optional)

   Instructions

  1.  Add 1/2 cup of instant oats/rolled oats to a bowl


     2.  Add 1/2 tbsp of chia seeds (optional)


    3.  Add 1 tbsp of honey (optional) I added honey because I used unsweetened soy milk


4) Add milk and mix them up! Pour them into a container and put them in the fridge. You can already have it after 30 minutes but everyone normally keep them overnight for an on-the-go breakfast for the next morning


5) This is how overnight oats looks like. I added a tad bit too much of soy milk but I don't mind it being slightly watery. Top it off with fruits, granolas, nuts etc.



3) Smoothies

    Who doesn't love smoothies? I love drinking smoothies but they are so expensive if you get them outside and I personally wouldn't spend so much on something that I know I can make myself. The reason why I included smoothie here is because I know not everyone like the taste of oats as some may find it bland and weird. You can still get the nutrition from oats by adding them into the smoothie without the oats's taste! 
 
  You'll need:
  • 1-2 frozen ripe bananas (you can use any fruits/frozen fruits of your choice)
  • Water/Milk/Ice
  • 2 tbsp rolled/instant oats

    Instructions

1) Add the water/milk first for smoother blending process! I'm not using ice because my bananas are already frozen so it'll do just fine. I didn't specified any measurements because it's flexible and you can add as much or as little as you like depending on the thickness of the smoothie you want.


2) Add the frozen bananas


 3) Add 2 tbsp of rolled/instant oats then blend! Add more water/milk if it's not enough.


4) Tadaaaa~~ Simple, quick and way cheaper too! Pour it into your favourite mason jar/cup and enjoy!



   4) Savoury Oats 


  Oohhh, here comes the tricky one. You'll either love it or hate it. I was very unsure when I first came across savoury oats but the other day, I thought why not just give it a go? I did search for recipes online but I decided to just dump in anything that I think will make it savoury hahaha and it turned out that I really liked it! I was craving for more after having the very last bite. I even made it for dinner again the next day! 

   You'll need:

  • Carrots [chopped]
  • Broccolis [chopped]
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup of water [flexible]
  • 1 tbsp of soy sauce
  • Dried parsley
  • Dried basil

  Instructions

1) Pour the rolled oats into the pot. Before adding the water, I roasted the oats for about 30-40 seconds, till I smell the roasted oats kinda smell  (wow such great explanation). Then, pour the water in.


    2) Add in the chopped carrots. Keep stirring!


 3) After cooking for about 3-5min, add the chopped broccolis!


4) Add the soy sauce and spices. You can use any spices of your choice.
   

5) Let it cook for a few more minutes and when the oats are at the consistency that you like, turn             off the heat and serve. Top it off with more spices/soy sauce and more broccolis because who               doesn't love tons of broccolis?



You can definitely add more vegetables or spices. I added mushroom the next round!
